The Christian life is about following Jesus and becoming more and more like Jesus, and learning to give sacrificially is a central hallmark of being a Jesus follower.

It is in God’s nature to give. Jesus came to give his life for us, and we see all through Jesus’ life and ministry how he gave all he had to be a blessing to others.

Although giving is not limited to any one resource that we have, Jesus spent more time teaching about money than he did teaching about most things. Jesus knew that nothing competes for control over our lives as much as money does, and Jesus is an infinitely more loving and gracious leader of our lives than money is.

Jesus teaches that when it comes to giving, there are 3 P”s that matter the most: Priority, Percentage, and Progressive.

Priority giving means that as we earn income, we give to God first, demonstrating that He comes first and foremost in our lives.

Percentage giving means God cares less about the amount you give and more about your generosity (example: a person who earns one million dollars per year and gives $10,000 a year has given significantly less generously than one who earns $10,000 per year and gives $1000). The scriptures teach that giving God the first 10% of our income is a matter of worship and demonstrating trust in God’s provision for us.  Although the tithe (giving the first 10% to God) is only taught explicitly in the Old Testament, the New Testament teaches that we should be ready to give God 100% of what we have and assumes tithing as a starting point.

Progressive means that as God blesses our income, we trust God with more of our income and increase the percentage of our giving.  Giving with a progressive mindset means that when God blesses you with more income, instead of thinking only about upgrading your lifestyle, you spend time seeking God’s will for increasing the percentage you are able to give to God and His work.
